Liverpool’s stars feel hard done by as they failed to make Fifa World XI

2 min read

Marcelo and Sergio Ramos somehow made it into the Fifpro World XI and Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold missed out, it doesn’t make any sense.

For most people Robertson and Alexander-Arnold would be the two best full backs in the world right now, with Joshua Kimmich the most obvious candidate to muscle his way in on the contest.

Somehow though the world’s professional footballers voted for Marcelo and Ramos to be the full backs in the Fifpro World XI, announced during yesterday’s FIFA The Best Awards, despite Ramos not even playing full back for a long time.

The two Liverpool players helped win the Reds their sixth European title, beating Spurs in the Champions League final, won the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea and finished second in the Premier League with a record 97 points.

Alexander Arnold was also part of the England team which finished third in the UEFA Nations League in the summer.

Ramos and Marcelo didn’t have anywhere near the success they’d had in previous years with Real, getting knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 and finishing third in La Liga.

They did win the FIFA World Club Cup, beating Kashima Antlers and Al-Ain on their way to the only silverware of their seasons.

Real’s defensive record was only the eighth best in Spain’s top tier last season as well, not exactly the kind of elite defending you’d want from the full backs in a World XI.

The Liverpool pair also put on an incredible 23 assists for their teammates in the 2018/19 season as Jurgen Klopp’s side came within a point of their first Premier League title.

Seriously, no matter how you dress it up, there’s simply no way the two Real men, for all their previous achievements, should be anywhere near a team of the year for the past 12 months.

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold can feel very hard done to.
