Pep Guardiola”League titles are lost in the first eight games”

2 min read

Liverpool are absolutely cruising at the top of the Premier League.

Eight games into the 2019/20 season and the Reds have a 100% win record and are eight points ahead of reigning champions Manchester City in second.

Saturday’s last-gasp victory over Leicester City piled the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side, who hosted Wolves a day later.

Incredibly, City lost 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

The international break has come at the perfect time for the Citizens as they look to regroup and find a way to catch Liverpool.

Much will depend on Liverpool’s form, though, because based on the opening eight games, they look unstoppable.

Kopites have every right to be confident of going on to win the title now, especially based on what Guardiola wrote in his 2014 book ‘Pep Confidential’.

In one excerpt, the Spaniard explains that league titles are won in the last eight games of a season but lost in the first eight.

By that logic, with City eight points behind Liverpool after eight games, the Premier League title has already been lost.

It’s a bit like a recipe,” said Guardiola. “League titles are won in the last eight games, but they are lost in the first eight.

Interesting.

Guardiola has never been one to surrender – just look at last season’s title race – but eight points behind after eight games is a huge gap and he’ll know it.

It’s going to require a minor miracle for City to catch Liverpool, who need to start dropping points for that to happen.
