Gareth Southgate has named a 23-man squad for England’s European Championship qualification matches against Bulgaria and Kosovo next week – and Leeds United fans are fuming.
Southgate brought in the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount, Tyrone Mings and James Maddison have all been called up to the Three Lions squad and are in with a chance of earning their first cap for their country.
Central midfield continues to be a position in which England are lacking. Southgate has called up Declan Rice from West Ham United and, Tottenham Hotspur pass master Harry Winks and Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson.
But there had been suggestions that Southgate may dip into the Championship and offer a shock call-up to some of the second-tier’s best players, including Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips – who was linked with a £30million move to Aston Villa.
Phillips has gone from a somewhat decent player at Leeds to becoming the most important player at Elland Road, in the eyes of many, under Marcelo Bielsa. Sitting at the base of the midfield, his ability to dictate the tempo of play has been excellent.
Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to the news that not 23-year-old Phillips, nor any other Championship players were called up to the England squad by Southgate to take on Kosovo and Bulgaria.
